Let’s learn to Speak, Read, Write and Understand Malayalam

Established in 2018, Pallikoodam is a Malayalam Community Language School affiliated with the Department of Education and a member of the NSW Federation of Community Language Schools. It is an educational venture of AMIA NSW, a non-profit community organization. We currently have a total of 50 students enrolled in our school.

Why learn Malayalam?

With over 35 million native speakers, Malayalam is the 8th most spoken language in India and one of the 22 languages recognized by the Constitution of India. A language, rich in literature and poetic in nature and engulfed by a friendly and colorful culture, the Malayalam language opens the doors to ‘God’s Own Country’ – Kerala.

Why learn Malayalam at Pallikoodam?

The primary connection to any culture and heritage is through its language and at Pallikoodam we try to ensure this connection is passed on to the next generation. The education imparted is aimed at keeping the culture and heritage closer to the roots. We also impart language knowledge to those who are interested in learning it for the purpose of traveling, conversing, or out of sheer interest in the language.

Message from Director

We acknowledge, respect, and value the Traditional Custodians and Owners of the Land and pay respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their leaders past, present, and emerging.

It is an honor to lead a dedicated team at Pallikoodam Malayalam Community Language School and be inspired by the amazing students who attend our school. By choosing to study the Malayalam language that is the key to Kerala’s culture, our students have opened up a pathway to further education and training and job opportunities. They are well equipped to embrace life beyond school and make a significant contribution to the future, some even becoming community leaders.

Our teaching staffs are committed to the concept of lifelong learning. They work collaboratively, focusing on supporting and enhancing the learning opportunities.

For our team, the year 2020 was a challenging one as we moved into virtual classrooms due to COVID-19. In 2021, we are moving back to face to face classroom while maintaining strict COVID protocols. The classes would be held at Auburn Public School on Sundays. We are grateful to the School authorities for extending this facility to Pallikoodam.

In 2020, we were also able to release a Malayalam textbook for our Level 1 students, deepening our partnership with Community Language school systems across NSW, and is now aiming to accomplish similar achievements for other Levels. I would like to congratulate the team who worked on this project and made it a success.

At the heart of our work is the conviction that teaching and learning will truly improve, if we focus on the students’ experiences. We strive to cultivate the thought of community, belonging, happiness and pride. It’s nurtured every day into our school culture and that makes teaching, leading, and learning everybody’s responsibility.

Lots of exciting things are planned for the current academic year that includes introducing Gamification – a game-based learning approach. May our collective efforts be as strong as the hopes and dreams of our students. Let’s all join together in celebrating a culture that emulates happiness, camaraderie and embracing everything positive.
